Review of Playtech’s Gladiator Slot Machine

The Gladiator Slot Machine from Playtech is one of my all time favourite and must play online slots.

Seriously it takes a lot to move me when trying out new online slots. But I have to say Playtech have come up with the complete Slot Game to beat all Video Slots in the form of Gladiator.

Available to play on recommended Playtech Casinos here on Online Casino Reviewer such as Omni Casino, Gladiator blew me away literally.

With two separate bonus features attainable in the form of the Coliseum Bonus and the Gladiator Bonus Rounds, slot players will find this slot a compelling and fun slot machine, which can offer hours of gameplay.

Unlike many other slots, which take a good hour or so of solid playing to become accustomed to the different payouts, features and quirks, Gladiator had me reeled in ( No Pun Intended! ) from the moment I clicked with the mouse on the Spin Button.

The first thing that struck me is the quality and sharpness of the graphics employed on each reel.

Not to be confused with the Gladiator 5 reel, 50 payline slot available on Microgaming Powered Online Casinos such as 32Red, Gladiator on Playtech casinos is based on the 2003 Russell Crowe film of the same name.

Strangely the only thing missing from Gladiator is the big brash New Zealander himself. With no confirmation from PlayTech as to his absence, I can only guess it is down to an issue with Crowe’s own image rights. Which is a shame to be honest, but it does not detract in the slightest from the playability of this great new game.

Obviously you can try out Gladiator in it’s full glory above, as we feature a fully functional free play version of the slot machine, but the video is also well worth watching as well.

In the video of me playing the slot, I hit the Coliseum Bonus Round and manage to get 8 spins with a x2 bet multiplier. In addition to that, I also hit an extra scatter and extra wild. Well worth watching.

For those of you who have spent a bit of time playing Gladiator, you will learn that getting extra wilds and extra scatter symbols in the Coliseum Bonus Round is not a very common event. Luckily I managed to do this during only my second attempt of capturing the video.

Gladiator is a twenty pay line slot game offering a staggering potential win of up to 5000 times your wagering bet. With two random bonus features available to hit.

Released by Playtech in 2008, Gladiator seriously still holds it’s own and is in my own humble opinion as good as any of the slot games being released now in 2019. Hence the high rating it has achieved here on Online Casino Reviewer.

But ratings are all subjective to the individual reviewer, but hopefully you will agree with me that this slot, with slick graphics, great cinematic effects and sounds is a hit and is likely to still be popular for many years to come.

Gladiator Slot – Coliseum Bonus Round

Gladiator Slot Coliseum Bonus Round

There are two separate bonus rounds available to be unlocked whilst playing Gladiator, the first one I will touch upon is the main one in the form of the Gladiator Coliseum Bonus Round.

To unlock the Coliseum Bonus Round in Gladiator you are required to hit three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the five reels in play. The Scatters are depicted aptly by Coliseum symbols.

You are then transported to the dungeon of the coliseum where you are presented with a board populated by tablets. The tablets chosen on the first  row shows you how many free spins you are awarded. The second row then reveals the bet multiplier in play during the bonus round. This can be anything up to five times your bet stake.

If you are fortunate to progress onto the third row rather than commencing the bonus round, you then get to reveal the scatter in play during the bonus round. If you manage to be able to choose a scatter, then prepare yourself for a very enjoyable Coliseum Bonus Round to play out in front of your eyes. As this is where the potential big wins playing Gladiator are.

The fourth and last row to choose from is the extra wild in play during the bonus round free spins. But these are not the only extras you receive in the bonus round. If  the Gladiator Emperor Symbol lands anywhere on the third reel whilst playing out your free spins, you are automatically awarded an additional 3 extra free spins. Furthermore the Coliseum Bonus Round can also be re-triggered by hitting three or more scatters.

Gladiator Slot Bonus Round

Gladiator Slot Bonus Round

The second bonus feature available to unlock in Gladiator is the Gladiator Bonus Round, which if you are playing the Progressive version of Gladiator also has additional significance.

The Gladiator Helmet Symbol is the slot’s wild card symbol which substitutes for all other symbols bar the Coliseum scatter symbol. However, if you hit three or more Helmet Symbols anywhere on the five reels you are then awarded the Gladiator Bonus Round.

If you happen to be playing the ‘Progressive’ version of Gladiator this also provides you with a chance of winning the Jackpot Progressive prize on offer.

Once the Gladiator Bonus Round has been activated you are taken to a screen where nine Gladiator Helmets are chosen. The helmets which appear are either made of Bronze, Silver or Gold. With Bronze being worth x1 your bet stake. Silver worth x3 your bet stake and gold being worth x5 your bet stake.

So potentially you could win up to 45 times your bet stake with the Gladiator Bonus Round. If you also happen to be playing the progressive version of Gladiator, you also as mentioned above have a chance of winning the progressive jackpot on offer.

To do this, nine gold helmets need to be revealed. A tall ask, but someone has to win it. However, there is one drawback to choosing to play the Gladiator Progressive Slot, in that the RTP ( Return to Player Value ) is lower than the normal standard game.

Gladiator Slot – Pay Table Information

Gladiator Pay Table Information

No doubt you have read our detailed review of Gladiator above and have played Gladiator for free or are about to.

Hopefully you will find it as compelling and fun to play as we do here on OCR.

Well below is a detailed breakdown of the pay table employed by the Gladiator Slot Machine.

Every single symbol used and utilized in the Gladiator Slot Machine is covered, inclusive of the standard Nine, Ten, Jack, Queen, King and Ace symbols which seem to be predominate in slot machines.

Nine Symbol

Gladiator Slot Nine Symbol

The Nine Symbol is the lowest valued symbol in play in the slot, alongside the ten symbol detailed below. Payouts are only awarded upon hitting three or more 9’s on any of the winning paylines.

To be able win an amount exceeding the value of your spin you need to hit five 9 symbols on a payline to do so. You will find that the 9 Symbol appears the most out of all the symbols when playing Gladiator.

Ten Symbol

Gladiator Ten Symbol

The Ten Symbol is the joint lowest value symbol in play in Gladiator and can only achieve a winning payout by occurring on a winning payline at least three times.

Get used to seeing the Ten Symbol appearing many times while you play Gladiator.  As a low value symbol, you need to hit 5 tens on a payline to make it worthwhile.  With three or four tens not even returning your original bet stake.

Jack Symbol

Gladiator Jack Symbol

The Jack Symbol along with the Queen symbol is the second lowest value symbol in play in Gladiator. Unlike the Nine and Ten Symbols which are detailed above, hitting four Jacks on any winning pay line provides a return exceeding the value of your spin.

Payouts are only possible by achieving three or more Jacks on any one of the 25 winning paylines in play in the slot.

Queen Symbol

Gladiator Queen Symbol

Like the Jack Symbol which is detailed directly above, the Queen Symbol in Gladiator is the joint second lowest value symbol in play.

Payouts are only awarded by hitting three or more Queens on any of the paylines in play in the game. By hitting four or more Queens on a payline, the return exceeds the amount bet.

King Symbol

Gladiator King Symbol

The third lowest value symbol that appears in Gladiator is the King Symbol. Initial payouts occur upon hitting a minimum of three King’s on a single payline.

A good filler symbol, getting a King on the Coliseum Bonus Round as your additional scatter should thus provide you with a decent return, due to the frequency the King appears during the game.

Ace Symbol

Gladiator Ace Symbol

The last of the standard playing card symbols, the Ace Symbol is worth the same value as the King Symbol and is the joint third lowest value symbol in the game.

Like the rest of the playing card symbols detailed above, the Ace’s appearance on the reels is fairly frequent and it’s payouts help to ensure your bankroll ticks over.

Juba Symbol

Juba Symbol

Juba is one of the central characters in the film and also the slot. Having befriended Russell Crowe’s character Maximus in the film.

The first of several picture symbols, you are required to have three or more Juba Symbols on a payline to achieve a win. Four or more Juba symbols returns an amount exceeding your stake.

Proximo Symbol

Proximo Symbol

The Proximo Symbol is based on the character Proximo so ably portrayed by the late Oliver Reed, in what turned out to be his last ever performance before his death. With Reed dying from a massive heart attack during a break in filming Gladiator, in  Valletta, Malta.

Proximo who was a freed slave in the Gladiator film is worth the same value as the Juba Symbol in the slot, paying out when appearing three or more times on any of the winning paylines in play.

Senator Gracchus Symbol

Senator Gracchus

If you start hitting paylines with Senator Gracchus then you will be happy, as three Gracchus symbols provides a return equalling the cost of your spin of the reels. Four or five Gracchus symbols in play provides a return exceeding the cost of a spin.

Another central character in the film. Senator Gracchus portrayed by Derek Jacobi is one of the Senators who opposes the rule of Emperor Commodus.

Lucilla Symbol

Lucilla Symbol

The Lucilla Symbol based on the character Lucilla, sister of Emperor Commodus and one time lover of Maximus, is one of the highest value symbols in Gladiator.

Payouts begin upon hitting only two or more Lucilla Symbols on a winning payline. Hitting three or more Lucilla Symbols provides a very decent return to the player.

Emperor Commodus Symbol

Emperor Commodus

The last of the characters to feature from the film is the Emperor Commodus Symbol, Emperor Commodus being of course the main protaganist in the film opposite Crowe’s Maximus.

The Commodus Symbol is also the highest value symbol in play in the slot and starts paying out upon hitting two or more Commodus Symbols on a payline. In addition, should the Commodus Symbol appear on the third reel during the Coliseum Bonus Round, players are awarded an additional three free spins.

Helmet Symbol

Helmet Symbol

The Helmet Symbol is Gladiator’s wild symbol used in the game, which substitutes for all other symbols barring the scatter symbol, which I cover directly below.

In addition, the Helmet Symbol is the key to unlocking the Gladiator Bonus Round, whereby three or more Helmet Symbols appearing anywhere on the five reels will activate the Gladiator Bonus Round.

Coliseum Symbol

Coliseum Symbol

The last symbol to be covered and arguably the most important symbol in Gladiator is the Coliseum Symbol, which is the slot’s scatter symbol. Hitting three or more anywhere on the five reels then unlocks the Coliseum Bonus Round, the main bonus feature in Gladiator.

Furthermore, hitting two or more Coliseum Symbols anywhere on the five reels also provides an additional payout.
