Students who go to school or
college to learn various subjects do so, in
part, by reading book on their particular
subjects. So why should learning poker be any
different? The answer is it shouldn’t, but yet
there are lots of players who have never picked
up a poker strategy book in their lives. They
convince themselves that they are good players
who don’t need any help because they know it
all.
Game selection is one of the
most important aspects of being a successful
poker player and with the explosion of online
card rooms it has become even more important. In
a brick and mortar casinos there may only be one
or two games to choose from making game
selection irrelevant, but on the internet where
there are literally hundreds of games to choose
from it becomes very important.
One of the most popular forms
of online poker today is the Sit and Go
Tournament, which is a single table tournament
that starts as soon as the table is full
(usually 10 players).
A bit of a maths lesson for
you this week as we look at calculating your
outs and pot odds, but please no calculators!
The number of outs you have are the remaining
cards in the deck with which you can win the
hand. So suppose you have a flush draw on the
flop in texas hold’em you would calculate your
chance of hitting your flush on the next card in
the following way
The saying ‘a chip and a
chair’ means that so long as you’ve got a chip
and a chair then you have a chance to win. It
originates from the 1982 World Series of Poker
where Jack Straus was down to only one $25 chip
early in the tournament, but staged a remarkable
comeback to win the event and become World
Champion.
It’s a big step to make the
jump from the comfort and anonymity of playing
on your computer at home to a real life casino
and poker tournament but hopefully by reading
this article you’ll feel more comfortable about
making that step.
Limit Hold’em has been
slightly forgotten about in the last couple of
years as all the televised tournaments seem to
be No-Limit and that is what the new players
coming into the game are learning.
With the advent of internet
poker one of the games that has gained
popularity is short handed play. A short handed
game is a table with no more than 6 players.
One of the most important and
often overlooked factors in a game of poker is
the dealer. A good dealer not only distributes
the cards, but controls the game, lets players
know when it is their turn to act, knows how
much the pot is when necessary and generally
keeps the game moving in a friendly, yet
professional manner. A bad dealer can leave you
tearing your hair out at their unprofessionalism
instead of concentrating on your own game. So
what makes a good dealer?
