Default Gambling laws brought forward

Quote:
Plans for a shake-up of gambling laws will now be introduced by the government before the end of this Parliamentary session.
Commons leader Peter Hain said that once introduced, the Gambling Bill would then be "carried over".

The Bill relaxes gambling controls but brings in measures to protect children.

Introducing the Bill this session, means it is more likely to become law as the next session is set to be squeezed by a general election.

It had been expected that the Gambling Bill would be introduced in the Queen's Speech at the start of the next session.

The planned relaxation of gambling regulations could allow local authorities to open up Las Vegas-style casino towns in deprived areas.

Many health groups and MPs have been critical of the plans - which they say could increase the levels of gambling addiction.

Mr Hain also announced that debate would begin in this session on the School Transport Bill, and, he hoped, the Disability Discrimination Bill - both of which have already been published in draft form.

This is fantastic news at last. It is ridiculous you have to wait 24 hours before a casino will accept you as a new member.[/url]

More on this:

Quote:
Blackpool Council has welcomed the government's decision to bring planned new gambling laws before Parliament during its next session.
The Gaming Bill would open the way for Las Vegas-style casinos in the Lancashire resort, which has been hit by declining tourism in recent years.

The council's Masterplan, published in 2003, relies on the bill to help bring in about £1.4bn of investment.

The bill aims to help regenerate deprived areas.

Reg Haslam, head of the Masterplan, said: "We have argued strongly that the new law should be used to help regenerate places like Blackpool.

"By putting regional casinos in Blackpool most people will not have gambling on their doorstep, but we will transform the economy of Blackpool and bring clear benefits to the wider North West region," he added.

'World-class'

The council hopes new gambling laws would help it transform the town into a "21st century world class resort".

But Mr Haslam warned that the Northwest Regional Planning Body and Northwest Development Agency would have to help by ensuring that casinos were built in the town rather than elsewhere in the region.

He said: "If they support Blackpool we are confident we will succeed.

"However, if they let market forces decide where casinos go then that, in effect, is a decision to allow Blackpool to continue to decline."

Freewheel,

Welcome to Online Casino Reviewer.

We have been studying closely the proposed Bill since the inception of the Budd Report. We believe it is great news for UK punters but obviously the government need to ensure there are the necessary safeguards in place to minimise the problems with people who have little or no self control.

Whatever happens it is not before time that the UK legislation was pulled out of the 1960's and into the 21st century as far as gaming is concerned.

Keep an eye on the site her at Online Casino Reviewer as we are in the process of writing an article on the effects and ramifications throughout the industry should this bill get passed.

The first reading got through the commons. Looks like some concessions will have to be made though by the government.

I can't see the bill if passed at all effecting the popularity of Online Poker in the slightest. What this will do though is give people more choice and give online players the chance of playing in a live real environment.

From the BBC:

Quote:
Tony Blair may have once again escaped defeat over a piece of legislation, but the government's gambling Bill is unlikely to survive unmolested.

It was never likely the Labour rebels would be able to muster enough support to defeat the Bill, even with Tory and Liberal Democrat support.

And the rebellion fell far short of presenting a real threat to the prime minister's authority.

But that does not mean this is the end of the matter.

In this pre-election period, the last thing the prime minister wants is a bloody battle with dissident MPs - and, probably more importantly from his point of view, some newspapers - over what most see as a policy of only middle ranking importance.
